When dark-acclimated cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. cv. Coker 312) leaves, pre-treated with lincomycin to inhibit chloroplast protein repair processes, were exposed to 10 °C and a PPFD of 500 μmol m-2 s-1, the proportion of excitation energy entering photochemistry (P) increased, but only to 5 % of the total energy absorbed at steady state levels of P, which were reached at 40 min of irradiation. Thermal dissipation (D) of absorbed energy increased throughout the 360 min irradiation period and accounted for the greatest portion of absorbed energy at 10 °C. When D was partitioned into constitutive (DCON), regulated (DREG), and photoinhibitory (DPI) components, it was primarily composed of DREG, the readily reversible portion of D. However, the induction of D was slow at 10 °C. Sixty minutes were required for D to reach 70 % of the energy absorbed. Considerable absorption of energy in excess of that utilized in photochemistry or dissipated thermally (designated as E) occurred, especially during induction of P and D. Over the irradiation period, the time-dependent averaged E exhibited an inverse, linear relationship with the ratio of variable (Fv) to maximum (Fm) fluorescence (PS2 efficiency) and a linear relationship with DPI. We propose that time-dependent averaged E may be useful for estimating the potential for damage to PS2 under stressful environmental conditions. and D. Kornyeyev, B. A. Logan, A. S. Holaday.
The photosynthetic election transport activities in beet spinách thylakoids were studied using ruthenium chloride as an electron acceptor, Like potassium ferricyanide, RUCI3 supported the non-cyclic electron flow with net evolution of oxygen. The rate of oxygen evolution was at its maximum with 0.5 mM RUCI3 at pH of 8.0 and the election flow coupled to translocation of protons into the thylakoid vesicles. Ruthenium chloride-supported oxygen evolution was inhibited by specific photosynthetic electron tiansport inhibitors like diuron, dibromothymoquinone, potassium cyanide, and mercuric chloride Unlike ferricyanide, the RuCl3-supported oxygen evolution was totally inliibited by potassium cyanide and mercuric chloride at both pH 8.0 and 6.5. Since potassium cyanide and mercuric chloride mostly interrupt the electron flow at plastocyanin level, RUCI3 probably accepts electrons mostly from photosystem 1 or its near vicinity. Besides electron acceptance, RUCI3 suppresses the photophosphoiylation activity in a manner similar to energy transfer inhibitors.
Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum Gaertn) has been praised as one of green foods for humans in the 21st century. Effects of fertilization on leaf photosynthetic characteristics and grain yield of tartary buckwheat has not been yet reported in detail. Our experiment was set as a split-plot factorial. The main plots and subplots were designed by fertilizer ratio and rate as: NPK 1:1:1 (A1), NPK 1:4:2 (A2), NPK 1:2:3 (A3), and 300 (B1), 450 (B2), and 600 (B3) kg (NPK) ha-1. Our results showed that the grain yield was significantly and positively correlated with the net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (E), PAR, stomatal limitation value (Ls), chlorophyll content (SPAD value), and leaf area index (LAI), while significantly and negatively correlated with intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) and water-use efficiency (WUE). The grain yield, PN, gs, E, PAR, Ls, SPAD, and LAI increased and then decreased with enhanced fertilization, and their maximum values appeared in the A2B2 treatment. The Ci and WUE decreased and then increased with enhanced fertilization, and their minimum values appeared in the A2B2 treatment. Our results suggested that fertilization had significant effects on the leaf photosynthetic capacity and grain yield of tartary buckwheat

The authors aimed to elucidate the circumstances surrounding the compilation of registers of souls in the diocese of Hradec Kralové, in the northeast of Bohemia, in the years 1776 and 1777. They also analysed the three extant registers as demographic sources for the study of the population of the day. The resulting data indicate that in the second half of the 18th century, the state had a considerable influence on how the registers of souls were kept and compiled in the Hradec Kralové diocese, and used them to obtain important information on the population, particularly in matters of religion. The volumes containing the registers of souls in 1776-77 represent an extremely valuable source from a demographic point of view that can be used not only to ascertain the numerical state of the population of a particular locality at the time of their compilation, but to study its age profile, social stratification and the typology of families and households., Jiří Pavlík a Radek Pokorný., and Obsahuje bibliografické odkazy
