- Based on materials collected from wild populations of the brown rat, Rattus norvegicus in South Bohemia, Czech Republic, previously unknown male is described and female redescribed for Demodex ratti Hirst, 1917. All developmental stages are described for two new species, D. norvegicus sp. n. and D. ratticola sp. n. Also provided is a key to adults of four Demodex species presently known to parasitize Rattus norvegicus. Demodex ratti was recovered from the host’s back, eyelids, and external auditory meatus, D. norvegicus from the anal and genital areas, and D. ratticola from vicinity of the mouth and the tip of muzzle.

3. Physiological response of wheat varieties to elevated atmospheric CO2 and low water supply levels

- In the phytotron experiment, the effect of elevated atmospheric CO2 (EC, 750 μmol mol-1) on the drought tolerance was studied in two winter varieties (Mv Mambo, tolerant; Mv Regiment, moderately tolerant) and in one spring variety of wheat (Lona, sensitive to drought). Changes in net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance, transpiration, wateruse efficiency, effective quantum yield of photosystem II, and activities of glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione-Stransferase (GST), guaiacol peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were monitored during water withdrawal. Drought caused a faster decline of PN at EC, leading to the lower assimilation rates under severe drought compared with ambient CO2 (NC). In the sensitive variety, PN remained high for a longer period at EC. The growth at EC resulted in a more relaxed activation level of the antioxidant enzyme system in all three varieties, with very low activities of GR, GST, APX, and POD. The similar, low values were due to decreases in the varieties which had higher ambient values. A parallel increase of CAT was, however, recorded in two varieties. As the decline in PN was faster at EC under drought but there was no change in the rate of electron transport compared to NC values, a higher level of oxidative stress was induced. This triggered a more pronounced, general response in the antioxidant enzyme system at EC, leading to very high activities of APX, CAT, and GST in all three varieties. The results indicated that EC had generally favourable effects on the development and stress tolerance of plants, although bigger foliage made the plants more prone to the water loss. - The article introduces the Czech broadside ballad as one of the genres of semi-popular production. It outlines its development, formal characteristics and specific features and, at the same time, points out its integration into the broader Central European cultural context. It mentions the interest of the Czech public at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century in this song genre and concerns more dosely with the collection of broadside ballads in the Museum of the Prostějov Region in Prostějov. It presents the extent of the collection, its physical State and the stage of scientific scrutiny. It specifies the chronological and genre aspects of the collection and mentions the minor curiosities. The aim of the article was not the content analysis of the individual prints, but rather the specification of their provenance. The enclosed provenance register lists the individual printers as well as printing families dedicated to the broadside production from the end of the eighteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century. The concluding part of the article accentuates the importance of broadside prints and the need of their preservation for future generations.

5. Tradiční doprava materiálu na krosnách v Krkonoších

- This text deals with the traditional methods of carrying materials on frame packs in Krkonoše. Like sleighs or wagons, frame packs were a traditional means of transport, used mainly in the mountains or rugged and hilly regions. Three different types of frame packs were used in Krkonoše. Frame packs with a shelf were the most common type: they featured atypical shelf onto which the load was placed. Frame packs with a board featured a simple wooden board as the main structural element. The latter type was equipped with straps used to affix the load. It was used by professional porters who often carried 100+ kilogram loads. The third type, known as the bench frame pack, was mostly used for transporting hay. The tough work of a porter was commonly passed from generation to generation. Porters worked in all seasons and under any and all weather conditions.
