This study measured individual leaf area expansion rate and leaf net photosynthetic rate (PN) of meadow bromegrass (Bromus riparius Rehm.), smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.) and hybrid bromegrass (B. riparius × B. inermis). Smooth bromegrass expanded individual leaf area 1.5 times faster than meadow bromegrass and hybrid bromegrass. PN was highest in smooth bromegrass, intermediate in hybrid bromegrass, and lowest in meadow bromegrass. Rapid growth of meadow bromegrass following defoliation compared to smooth bromegrass and hybrid bromegrass could not be explained by higher rates of these measured characteristics. and B. The present study revealed that Ginkgo biloba and Platanus occidentalis, the most abundant roadside trees in Seoul, grown under polluted environmental conditions, displayed lower contents of total chlorophyll (Chl), carotenoids (Car), and ascorbic acid (AsA) compared to the trees grown under clean conditions. The reduction in Chl, Car, and AsA contents was 59, 53, and 50%, respectively, in G. biloba, contrary to 26, 23, and 24%, respectively, in P. occidentalis. Furthermore, relative ion leakage and leaf temperature was higher in the trees grown under polluted conditions than in those grown under clean conditions. The increase in relative ion leakage and leaf temperature was 58 and 3% for G. biloba and 17 and 4% for P. occidentalis, respectively. Our results, therefore, highlighted the negative impact of urban environmental pollution on the physiological and biochemical parameters in roadside trees., H. N. You, S. Y. Woo, C. R. Partitioning of exogenously supplied U-14C-saccharose into primary metabolic pool as sugars, amino acids, and organic acids was analyzed and simultaneous utilization for production of alkaloid by leaf, stem, and root in twigs and rooted plants of Catharanthus roseus grown in hydroponic culture medium was determined. Twigs revealed comparable distribution of total 14C label in leaf and stem. Stems contained significantly higher 14C label in sugar fraction and in alkaloids [47 kBq kg-1(DM)] than leaf. In rooted plants, label in 14C in metabolic fractions in root such as ethanol-soluble, ethanol-insoluble, and chloroform-soluble fractions and in components such as sugars, amino acids, and organic acids were significantly higher than in stems and leaves. This was related with significantly higher content of 14C in alkaloids in stems and leaves. 14C contents in sugars, amino acids, and organic acids increased from leaf to stem and roots. Roots are the major accumulators of metabolites accompanied by higher biosynthetic utilization for alkaloid accumulation. and N. K. Srivastava, A. K. Srivastava.
