Three amoeba species were isolated from 3 out of 193 farmed tilapias, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), screened for the presence of free-living amoebae in parenchymatous organs. Hartmannella vermiformis Page, 1967 and Rosculus ithacus Hawes, 1963 were isolated from the kidney tissue. The third strain isolated from the liver shared morphological features of Mayorella and Platyamoeha spp. and therefore its taxonomic position has not been determined as yet. Pathogenicity of cloned strain of H. vermiformis was proved in two fish hosts.
Ninety four aquarium fishes were screened for the presence of amoebae in their internal organs. Five specimens of Ca-rassius auratus (L.) and one specimen of Xiphophorus hetleri Heckel were positive. Of the three strains which were isolated from C. auratus, successfully cloned and cultivated, one was identified as Vannella platypodia (Gläser, 1912) Page, 1976 and two strains as Rosculus ithacus Hawes, 1963. Both species are reported for the first time from organs of fish. None of them could be identified with the amoeba-like agent of goldfish granulomas described here.
Justifying the subordinated position of women in society by appealing to biological sex diferences has a long history and is popular today, too. In this article the author aims to reconstruct some counter-arguments against such kind of legitimisation of gender inequality developed by Harriet Taylor Mill and John Stuart Mill in the 19th century. These philosophers articulated the problem of women’s subjection, and in line with their liberal position argued for women’s liberation on the grounds of freedom and social justice as well as on those of ethical utilitarism. Canningia spinidentis gen. et sp. n. infects the fir bark beetle Pityokteines spinidens Rtt. in Austria. The pathogen attacks mainly the fat body, Malpighian tubules, the muscles and the connective tissue of larvae and adults, and the gonads of adults. The development is haplokaryotic, with single spores. Spores are short tubular, uninucleate, with globular anchoring disc inserted subapically, laterally, in a depression of the endospore wall. Polar filament is isofilar, with 5/6 coils. Polaroplast is composed of two lamellar parts of different density. A new genus Canningia gen. n. is proposed based on differences in ultrastmc-tures of spores from Unikaryon Canning, Barker, Hammond et Nicholas, 1974.
The partial shading effect on the photosynthetic apparatus of the sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) was examined by monitoring oxygen evolution, maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry in dark-adapted leaves (Fv/Fm), the chlorophyll (Chl) concentrations and the Rubisco contents, and leaf mass per area (LMA) at the leaf level and by determining the concentrations of cytochrome (Cyt) f and the reaction centres of photosystem (PS) I and PSII at the thylakoid level. In this experiment, partial shading was defined as the shading of 2nd leaves with shade cloths, and the whole treatment was defined as the covering of the whole individuals with shade cloths. In the leaf level responses, oxygen evolution, LMA, Chl concentrations and Rubisco contents decreased in all shade treatments administered for six days. Fv/Fm remained constant irrespective of the shade treatments. On the other hand, in the thylakoid-level responses, the concentrations of the thylakoid components per unit Chl and the stoichiometry of the two photosystems showed no statistical difference among the shade treatments. The data obtained from the present study indicate that the partial shading affected the leaf-level responses rather than the thylakoid-level responses. The light received at the lower leaves might serve as a factor in the regulation of the leaf properties of the upper leaves due to the whole plant photosynthesis, while this factor did not have an effect at the thylakoid level., J. Predicted future climatic changes for the Mediterranean region give additional importance to the study of photooxidative stress in local economic species subjected to combined drought and
high-temperature conditions. Under this context, the impact of these stresses on photosynthesis, energy partitioning, and membrane lipids, as well as the potential ability to attenuate oxidative damage, were investigated in Ceratonia siliqua L. Two thermal regimes (LT: 25/18°C; HT: 32/21°C) and three soil water conditions (control, water stress, and rewetting) were considered. HT exacerbated the adverse effects of water shortage on photosynthetic rates (PN) and PSII function. The decrease in PN was 33% at LT whereas at HT it was 84%. In spite of this, the electron transport rate (ETR) was not affected, which points to an increased allocation of reductants to sinks other than CO2 assimilation. Under LT conditions, water stress had no significant effects on yield of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII) and yields of regulated (ΦNPQ) and nonregulated (ΦNO) energy dissipation. Conversely, drought induced a significant decrease of ΦPSII and a concomitant increase of ΦNO in HT plants, thereby favouring the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, signs of lipid peroxidation damage were detected in HT plants, in which drought caused an increase of 40% in malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Concurrently, a marked increase in proline content was observed, while the activities of catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were unaffected. Despite the generation of a moderate oxidative stress response, C. siliqua revealed a great capability for photosynthetic recovery 36 h after rewatering, which suggests that the species can cope with predicted climate change. and M. Using degenerative primers designed on the basis of known sequences of lectin genes from different sources a fragment of genomic DNA of Borrelia burgdorferi ( strain B31) that contained a lectin-like sequence was isolated, cloned and sequenced. The presence of an open reading frame of 268 amino acids (position 1501-2304 bp) and the computer analysis of the predicted amino acid sequence showed 37% of identity and 75% of homology over region of 25 amino acids with the legume lectin proteins, including erythroagglutinating phytohcmagglutinin (РНЛ-Е) and leucoagglutinating phylohemagglutinin (PHA-L). The further analysis of the predicted amino acid sequence showed the presence of another two domains (positions 198-211 and 215-226 aa) consisting of the characteristic conserved sequence motifs for legume lectin proteins. Hemagglutinating activity was detected in lysate of В burgdorferi (strain B31) spirochete and the affinity to fetuin was determined in a hemagglutination inhibition test. Hemagglutinating activity was also found in a crude lysate of the recombinant clones carrying the fragment of B. burgdorferi genomic DNA. The inhibition of agglutinating activity by fetuin, D-galactosamine and D-mannosamine was determined using the standard procedure of hemagglutination inhibition test with native rabbit red blood cells (RBC).
