Maize plants of CPB2 and CPB8 hybrids were kept under water deficit for 22 d. In the CPB8 hybrid, leaf rolling initiated at the 9th d of water deficit period, while in CPB2 hybrid it was at the 15th d. Both hybrids showed leaf rolling initiation at the same leaf water potential, ΨW of -0.480±0.095 MPa. At leaf rolling initiation, the leaf osmotic potential, ΨS was -0.730±0.085 MPa in CPB8 and 0.630±0.110 MPa in CPB2. The leaf temperature and stomatal conductance were higher in CPB8 than in CPB2. Values of leaf ΨW, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase activity, chlorophyll content, and specific leaf area were similar in both hybrids. Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activity and protein content were lower in the CPB2 hybrid than in CPB8. In both hybrids leaf rolling initiation was associated with: (1) higher leaf temperature, with leaf rolling effect related to leaf temperature reduction, and (2) lower leaf ΨS, related to osmotic adjustment as an additional component of drought-tolerance strategy. and D. The photoprotective function of leaf betacyanin in water-stressed Amaranthus cruentus plants was examined by comparing leaves of two strains which differ significantly in the amount of betacyanin. At 0, 1, and 2 days after the imposed water stress, leaves were subjected to high-light (HL) treatment to assess their photosynthetic capacity and photoinhibition susceptibility. The water stress equally reduced leaf relative water content (RWC),
gas-exchange rate and chlorophyll (Chl) contents in both leaves, indicating that the severity of water stress was comparable between the strains. Consequently, the extent of photoinhibition after the HL treatment increased in both strains as water stress developed; however, it was significantly greater in acyanic leaves than in betacyanic leaves, suggesting lower photoinhibition susceptibility in the betacyanic strain. The betacyanic leaves also exhibited approximately 30% higher values for photochemical quenching coefficient (qP) during the period of water stress despite the nonphotochemical quenching coefficient (qN) did not differ significantly between the strains. These results may be partially explained by the increased amount of leaf betacyanin under water stress. Moreover, a decrease in Chl content in betacyanic leaves might have enhanced light screening effect of betacyanin by increasing relative abundance of betacyanin to Chl molecule. In addition, reduced Chl content increased light penetrability of leaves. As a result, the extent of photoinhibition at the deeper tissue was exacerbated and the Chl fluorescence emitted from these tissues was more readily detected, facilitating assessment of photoinhibition at deeper tissues where the effect of betacyanic light screening is considered to be most apparent. Our results demonstrated that leaf betacyanin contributes to total photoprotective capacity of A. cruentus leaves by lowering excitation pressure on photosystem II (PSII) via attenuation of potentially harmful excess incident light under water stress. and T. The effects of water deficit on photochemical parameters and activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase were investigated in two olive cultivars differing in drought tolerance - 'Chemlali' and 'Chetoui'. After 30 days without irrigation, leaf water potential fell to -5.5 MPa that was accompanied by a marked decrease in net photosynthesis in 'Chetoui' olive cultivar. Maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm) decreased slightly in 'Chemlali' (28 %) and substantially in 'Chétoui' (47 %). Both cultivars showed a similar decline (about 25 %) in the photochemical quenching coefficient, but only the drought-sensitive olive cultivar exhibited an enhancement (31 %) of non-photochemical fluorescence quenching under water deficit conditions. The quantum yield of electron transport decreased in both olive cultivars. 'Chemlali' showed a higher protection against oxidative stress, as judged from the lower levels of the malondialdehyde production. Catalase activity was higher in 'Chetoui'. Glutathione reductase activity was increased similarly in both olive cultivars under water stress. Ascorbate peroxidase activity was enhanced in 'Chemlali' under water stress, but was unaffected in 'Chetoui'. While, superoxide dismutase activity was inhibited in both cultivars under water stress, but higher activity was detected in 'Chemlali'. Thus, the ability to increase ascorbate peroxidase and a higher superoxide dismutase activity might be an important attribute linked to the drought tolerance in 'Chemlali' olive cultivar. and M. In the order C. microphylla - C. intermedia - C. korshinskii, compensation irradiance, saturation irradiance, and optimum temperature for photosynthesis increased, net photosynthetic rate (PN) at low irradiance and low temperature decreased, optimum air humidity decreased, and PN at low air humidity increased. Daily cumulative value of PN increased while daily cumulative value of transpiration (E) decreased, and hence water use efficiency (WUE =PN/E) increased. Diurnal course of PN of C. microphylla was a double-peak curve, but the second peak in the curves of C. intermedia and C. korshinskii was not visible. These physiological characteristics are biological basis for the geographical distribution of these three Caragana species, and are in relation to water conditions of their habitats and distinctiveness in leaf hair of plant. and C. The gas exchange, parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence, contents of pigments, and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), as well as lipid peroxidation were investigated in two field-grown coffee species, Coffea arabica and C. liberica, exposed to drought and re-hydration. Drought caused a more pronounced inhibition of net photosynthetic rate in C. liberica compared to C. arabica. The de-epoxidation of xanthophyll cycle pigments at midday estimated by leaf reflectance was much higher in C. arabica than in C. liberica, but no significant change was found in response to drought. Under moderate drought, the activities of SOD and APX increased significantly only in C. arabica. The maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (Fv/Fm) at predawn did not change and there was no lipid peroxidation during this time. Under severe drought Fv/Fm decreased and initial fluorescence (F0) increased for both species, and SOD activity increased, APX activity remained relatively high, and malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulated in C. arabica, while APX decreased in C. liberica. The photosynthetic apparatus of C. arabica was completely recovered after 5 d of re-irrigation as indicated by the restoration of Fv/Fm to the control values. A lack of recovery upon rewatering of C. liberica indicated irreversible damage to PS2. Hence compared to C. liberica, C. arabica possesses a higher desiccation-induced antioxidative protection and higher portion of the total pigment pool used in photoprotection, which might aid alleviating photoinhibitory damage during desiccation and photosynthesis recovery when favourable conditions are restored. and Z.-Q.
