Some instances of ditch systems from the region around Leipzig show the necessary association between aerial archaeology and archaeological excavation. Interpreting archaeological features from the air by means of their form and as part of a larger context is as important as the examination of these results with the aid of excavation. A good opportunity to cross–check the information gained by aerial archaeology is provided in Saxony by the way that large scale excavations are practised: the complete investigation of linear projects. Excavations on pipelines and highways give only a narrow view into the ground, but that over long distances and in a dense network. In the region south of Leipzig such information is complemented by the intensive excavation of large areas that is made necessary by open–cast coal mining. New understanding results from the combination of ‘non–destructive’ aerial archaeology with ‘destructive’ but necessary rescue excavations. Such insights are very helpful in the interpretation of archaeological features as uncovered by excavation. Moreover, the overwhelming majority of archaeological structures recognised from the air over the last decade have thus been dated, and are understood in the larger context of the landscape. and Některé příklady příkopových systémů z okolí Lipska ukazují význam propojení letecké archeologie a terénního¨výzkumu. Interpretovat archeologické objekty ze vzduchu podle jejich formy a širšího kontextu je stejně důležité jako potvrzení těchto výsledků metodami terénního výzkumu. Dobrou příležitost k ověření poznatků získaných leteckou archeologií v Sasku poskytuje vedle rozsáhlých odkryvů i dokumentace lineárních projektů. Výzkumy při budování dálnic a potrubí nabízejí pohled sice zúžený, ale v husté síti a velkých vzdálenostech. V oblasti jižně od Lipska jsou tyto informace doplňovány intenzivním velkoplošným výzkumum areálů ničených povrchovou těžbou uhlí. Nové možnosti přináší kombinace „nedestruktivní“ letecké archeologie a „destruktivní“, ale důležité záchranné činnosti. Jejich konfrontace přispívá k výkladu archeologických objektů neodkrytých terénním výkopem. Převážná většina archeologických struktur zjištěná v posledním desetiletí ze vzduchu tak mohla být časově zařazena a chápána v širším kontextu vývoje krajiny.
