During a survey of birds from Argentina, two species of Digenea, one of them new, were found parasitizing the great antshrike, Taraba major (Vieillot) (Aves: Thamnophilidae). The strigeid, Strigea orbiculata sp. n. is characterized by having a body plump, a copulatory bursa without a membraneous fold ('Ringnapf'), entire testes, eggs with miracidia with eye-spots, by the arrangement of vitelline follicles in the forebody, which are densely distributed from its anterior edge, and by the absence of a neck region in the hindbody. Among the known Neotropical species of Strigea Abildgaard, 1790, only five share with Strigea orbiculata sp. n. the body shape and the distribution of vitelline follicles in the forebody: Strigea caluri Dubois, 1962, S. elliptica (Brandes, 1888), S. inflecta Lunaschi et Drago, 2012, S. nugax Szidat, 1928 and S. sphaerocephala (Westrumb, 1823 nec Brandes 1888). However, S. caluri can be easily distinguished by having a membraneous fold in the copulatory bursa originated from ''Ringnapf'', and multilobed testes. Strigea elliptica differs mainly by having a well developed ''Ringnapf'' and the remaining species differ principally by metrical characters. The dicrocoeliid, Lyperosomum oswaldoi (Travassos, 1919) is reported for the first time from Argentina and T. major represents its new definitive host. The host specificity of Neotropical Strigea spp. is discussed and an updated list of records of their hosts is provided.
Four new species of feather mites belonging to three different genera of the family Pteronyssidae are described from passerine birds of South Africa: Pteroherpus africanus sp, n, from the garden bulbul Pycnonotus barbatus (Desfontaines) (Pycnonotidae), Pteroherpus cysticolae sp. n. from the wing-snapped cisticola Cisticola ayresii Hartlaub (Sylviidae), Pteronyssoides promeropis sp. n. from the Gurney’s sugarbird Promerops gurneyi Verreaux (Promeropidae), and Sturnotrogus creatophorae sp. n. from the wattled starling Creatophora cinerea Menschen (Sturnidae). A brief review of recent publications on the taxonomy of the family Pteronyssidae is given.
Two species of avian tapeworms, Мonorcholepis dujardini (Krabbe, 1869) and M. passerellae (Webster, 1952), of the cyclophyllidean family Aploparaksidae Mayhew, 1925 (earlier included in the Hymenolepididae) are redescribed. Relative to congeners, the morphology of the strobila of both species shows strong similarities including a unique form of the cirrus. Separation of these species, however, can be based on the number (40-53 and 25-31, respectively) and size (18-25 µm and 14-18 µm) of the rostellar hooks, although their shape in specimens of both species varies considerably. We examined specimens of Monorcholepis dujardini in Turdus iliacus L., T. philomelos Brehm and T. merula L. from the Curonian Spit (Baltic Sea, Russia), T. naumanni Temminck from Chukotka, Motacilla alba L. from the Kuril Islands (Russia) and Passerella iliaca iliaca (Merrem) from Alaska (USA). Specimens in T. iliacus from the collection of O. Fuhrmann (Natural History Museum, Geneva, Switzerland) were re-studied. The type material (holotype and paratypes) designated as M. dujardini neoarctica (Webster, 1955) in Ixoreus naevius naevius (Gmelin) from Douglas Island, USA was re-examined and validity of this subspecies was rejected. A redescription of M. passerellae (Webster, 1952) was based on material in P. iliaca iliaca from Wisconsin (type specimen), and Point Barrow, Alaska, and on the one specimen recorded for the first time, in Turdus iliacus from the Palaearctic (Curonian Spit). Species of the genus Monorcholepis Oshmarin, 1963 and subgenus Aploparaksis (Tanureria) Spassky et Yurpalova, 1968 are characterized by similar topography of the gonads. These generic taxa and the interrelationships of constituent species are discussed.
Three new quill mite species of the genus Syringophiloidus Kethley, 1970 (Acari: Syringophilidae) from Slovakia are described and figured: S. bombycillae sp. n. from the waxwing Bombycilla garrulus (L.) (Passeriformes: Bombycillidae), S. schoeniclus sp. n. from the reed bunting Emberiza schoeniclus L. (Passeriformes: Emberizidae) and S. montanus sp. n. from the tree sparrow Passer montanus (L.) (Passeriformes: Ploceidae). A key to all known species of the genus Syringophiloidus is given.
Two new species of the syringophilid mites (Acari: Syringophilidae) are described from quills of passeriform birds. Syringophilopsis faini sp. n. is described from Sylvia curruca (L.) (Sylviidae) and Syringophiloidus carpodaci sp. n. is described from Carpodacus erythrinus (Pall.) (Fringillidae). Characters are detailed that differentiate Syringophilopsis faini from three species of a new "turdus" group, and Syringophiloidus carpodaci from S. minor.
