An analysis of the bones from the settlement in Brozany nad Ohří (Litoměřice district) dated to the Salzmünde phase of the Funnel Beaker culture revealed standard characteristics for the reconstruction of the paleoeconomic situation and provided information regarding several unusual and interesting finds. There is a distinct predominance of domestic animals over wild species, with cattle being the most prominent domestic species. A total of sixteen species of wild animals were identified. Interesting finds include pig skulls, a complete skeleton of a fox, bones from perhaps synanthropic field mice, a fragment of an eagle bone, a vertebra from a large salmonid fish, scales from asp and chub and an assemblage of eight probably intentionally perforated shells. The skeletal remains of eight puppies were found in two settlement features, and skeletal remains of three newborn humans were also found in two settlement features. The co-occurrence of puppies and newborns in the same context indicates their equal depositional status. The material also contains a number of bone artefacts. and Rozbor kostí pocházejících ze sídliště v Brozanech nad Ohří (okr. Litoměřice), datovaného do salzmündské fáze kultury nálevkovitých pohárů, přinesl jak standardní charakteristiku paleoekonomické situace, tak i informace o několika neobvyklých a zajímavých nálezech. V materiálu výrazně převládají domácí zvířata nad divokými a mezi domácími zvířaty dominuje tur. Divokých živočichů bylo detekováno celkem 16 druhů. Zajímavými nálezy jsou kompletní lebky prasat, skelet lišky, kosti snad synantropních myšic, fragment kosti orla, obratel velké lososovité ryby a kumulace šupin bolena a jelce a soubor osmi perforovaných lastur velevrubů. Materiál obsahuje i soubor kostěných artefaktů.
Podává přehled stavu výzkumu, nálezové základny a přírodního prostředí sídelních regionů – dolního Poohří a Podřipska, Podkrušnohorského úvalu a středního Poohří, sleduje strukturu osídlení obou kultur a jeho datování. Rozdíly mezi situací v severozáp. a středních Čechách skýtají možnost sledovat na regionální úrovni proměny, k nimž zde v průběhu šesti fází středního eneolitu docházelo. and Baden and Řivnáč culture in northwest Bohemia. The work is based on a list of Baden culture finds and those from the ensuing Řivnáč culture in the territory of northwest Bohemia. It provides an overview of the status of research, the base for finds and the natural environment of the settlement regions – the lower and central Ohře River regions, Říp Hill surrounding and region under Krušné hory/Mts.: the work follows the settlement structure of both cultures and the dating of this settlement. Baden culture is represented here to a significantly weaker extent than in central Bohemian regions and settlement is not reliably documented until the later phase of the middle (classic) stage. On the other hand, the datable Řivnáč culture assemblages fall exclusively into its earlier stage, indicating that this culture existed here for a shorter period than in central Bohemia, most likely due to the arrival of the Globular Amphora culture. Perhaps this is the same reason there was no development of hillforts here as in central Bohemia. The differences between the situations in northwest and central Bohemia offer an opportunity to follow the transformations on the regional level that occurred here during the course of the six phases of the middle Eneolithic period.
Předkládaná stať přináší přehled dosavadního stavu pramenné základny, a především na jejím základě formuluje své závěry. and The Jurassic cherts from the area of today’s Bavaria represent a significant phenomenon which, unlike other phenomena, penetrates the Bohemian prehistoric cultural environment from the west. Although these raw materials have been used in the territory of Bohemia continuously at least from the Upper Paleolithic period to the Early Eneolithic, it is possible to observe different trends both in terms of supply amount, and in the preference for individual varieties. The presented paper offers an overview of the current state of source materials, and also forms conclusions on this basis.
Analýza je založena na rozboru keramiky, součástí statě je i vyhodnocení osteologického materiálu. and The several years lasting research of the Kolín bypass uncovered a number of polycultural sites, among others also features that contained both Bošáca culture and Řivnáč culture pottery. Based on the current knowledge, the Kolín region formed part of the ecumene of the latter culture; origins of the Bošáca pottery are therefore sought in eastern Bohemia that comprised the western outpost of the Bošáca culture expansion. The find is interpreted as an evidence of exogamous relationships connecting regions approx. 50 km apart from each other; hoard of attractively decorated drinking horns in feature no. 4199 refers to a possible ritual or cult role connected with libation or sworn drinking rituals or else vegetative cults. The analysis is based on pottery, and the article includes also assessment of the osteological material.
Dlouhodobý průzkum severovýchodního okolí Prahy poskytl značné množství archeologických pramenů různých období, mj. památek řivnáčské kultury z konce středního eneolitu (ca 3100–2800 BC). Nejdůležitější soubor pochází z polozemnice obj. 13/76 v Praze-Dubči ze starší fáze řivnáčské kultury. Z jejího inventáře zaujme zejména hojný výskyt formálně archaické hrubotvaré industrie. Na základě distribuce a četnosti 16 evidovaných lokalit řivnáčské kultury ve sledované oblasti a jejího srovnání s jinými regiony se autoři zabývají otázkou, zda tamější výrobní aktivity nositelů této kultury byly převážně zemědělské, nebo zda mohly být v některých méně příhodných oblastech též pastevecké. and On the settlement of the Řivnáč culture on the eastern periphery of Prague. The long-term research in the north-eastern area of Prague have yielded a substantial amount of archaeological evidence from various periods, including relics of the Řivnáč culture from the end of the Middle Eneolithic (ca 3100–2800 BC). The most important assemblage stems from feat. (pit-house) No. 13/76 in Prague-Dubeč, dating to the earlier phase of the Řivnáč culture. Of particular interest in its inventory is the abundant occurrence of the formally archaic heavy-tool industry. Based on the distribution and frequency of 16 recorded localities of the Řivnáč culture in the studied area and their comparison with other regions, the authors focus on the question of whether the local manufacturing activities conducted by the bearers of this culture were primarily agricultural in nature or whether they may also have been pastoral in less suitable areas.
Kr. lze pak vysvětlit jako důsledek přesunu řeky jižněji, čímž se meandr, při jehož břehu areál ležel, změnil ve slepé rameno. and The settlement area situated at the edge of a Würm-dating terrace in the centre of the Elbe flood plain had been used – with longer breaks – since the Early Eneolithic until the beginning of the Early Bronze Age. Thereafter, a sand dune mostly covered it and protected the rich in finds cultural layer. Pottery analysis attests for five different settlement phases. The earliest, Michelsberg phase yielded the ground plan of house no. 3, the first of this type in Bohemia. The ground plan of another house, no. 4, also represents the first detected instance of this type in the country, dating to the early (Baalberg) phase of the Funnel Beaker culture. The ground plans of three more houses are equally unique in their chronological context: ship-shaped ground plan, no. 1, belongs to the 4th phase and dates to the Bell Beaker culture, and two narrow rectangular houses, no. 5 and 6, belong to the early phase of the Únětice culture. Excavation and surface survey enabled assessment of the approximate size of the settlement area, including a rough estimate of the area occupied in each particular phase. The position of the settlement next to the active Elbe watercourse seems to have significantly determined its function, since the Elbe river represented one of the most important means of long-distance communication in Bohemia. The decline of the settlement area approx. after year 2000 BC may then be explained as consequence of the river’s relocation southward, which turned the meander where the settlement existed in a dead-end channel (palaeochannel).
Příčiny vzniku a rozsah chorobných změn pohybového aparátu se u studovaných jedinců různí (trauma, specifický zánět a vrozená vývojová vada), u všech tří se ale nepochybně jedná o postižení dlouhodobé či (v jednom případě) celoživotní. and Anthropological analysis of skeletal remains from the Eneolithic Bell Beaker culture site of Kolín uncovered during a rescue excavations in 2008–2010 revealed a concentration of paleopathological finds in the section labelled II-3. We present three case studies, descriptions of pathologies manifested in bones and its diagnoses are completed with likely functional impacts and activity limitations. Although the impairments described in the study differ in its severity and etiology (trauma, specific inflammation and congenital anomaly), all of them show evidences of long-term (or lifelong) living with the impairment.
Počáteční stadium eneolitu patří na území Čech k obdobím nálezově silně podreprezentovaným. Stále tedy má význam pracovat i s nedostatečně dokumentovanými materiály – což je případ nálezového souboru z Hřebče, lokality z jihozáp. výspy středočeské sídelní ekumeny. Jde zjevně o další příklad dlouhodobě zanášených objektů, příp. terénních muld. and The initial stage of the Eneolithic period is a period much under-represented on Bohemian territory. It therefore makes sense to continue working even with insufficiently documented materials – which is the case with the find assembly from Hřebeč (distr. Kladno), a site on the south-western edge of the Central Bohemian settlement ecumene. The assembly, collected apparently from a larger clay-pit, is noteworthy not only in terms of quality and number, but also in terms of chronological scope, covering the period from the Bohemian Late Lengyel to the Late Michelsberg/Early Funnel Beaker culture (ca. 4400/4300 – 3900/3800 BC cal.). This is evidently an example of long-term siltation of features, or low ground terrain, as shown in similar situations from Bohemia and Moravia.
Srovnání nevelkého množství podobných nálezových situací může naznačovat, že nízké zastoupení zahloubených sídlištních objektů v českých lokalitách je spíše důsledkem jejich původní funkce a využití v rámci sídelního areálu než redukcí v průběhu archeologizace a případných zásahů do terénu včetně archeologického výzkumu. and Area excavation in the sand-pit near the Vlíněves municipality, Mělník distr., accomplished in the years 1999–2008, yielded – apart from a number of finds from different periods of the agricultural prehistory – also finds of the Bell Beaker culture. Finds of this culture, recorded in settlement context, are presented and their find context and spatial distribution within the excavated area discussed. Comparison of the few similar find situations may suggest that the low incidence of sunken settlement features at Czech sites is due to their original purpose and use within the settlement area rather than their reduction during archaeologization or potential terrain interventions including archaeological excavation.
Eneolitické představovaly ceněnou komoditu, často dávanou do hrobů příslušníků elity. Oproti tomu dvě třetiny severských dýk z mladoúnětického období vykazují vazbu na říční a suchozemské komunikační směry a značná část jich je ze sídlišť charakteru centrálních míst či uzlových bodů. Dýky v této době zřejmě nebyly předmětem směny, ale jejím průvodním znakem. Je pravděpodobné, že zčásti patřily k výbavě lidí účastnících se provozu na dálkových komunikacích, spojujících alpskou rudnou oblast s únětickou kulturou a severským okruhem. and Finds of silicite daggers in Bohemia (52 specimens) come from two productions circuits – the southern, subalpine circuit, and the northern, Baltic circuit – and date to five horizons between the Middle Eneolithic and the Early Bronze Age. Some of the lance-shaped daggers from the context of Eneolithic cultures are of southern origin (Cham, Řivnáč, Corded Ware culture – from Bavarian tabular chert), while others are of northern origin (protoand early Únětice culture). Later types of Nordic daggers with handles date to the Early Bronze Age (late Únětice culture). A substantial difference is evident in the function of the daggers from the two periods. The Eneolithic daggers represented a valuable commodity that was often buried with members of the elite as a grave good. On the other hand, two-thirds of the Nordic daggers from the late Únětice period show a link to river and overland routes; a substantial number of these daggers are from settlements with the nature of a central location or junction points. In this period daggers were apparently not a subject of exchange but rather an attendant trait. It is probable that some of the daggers were part of the gear of people involved in the operation of travel over the long-distance routes connecting the ore territory in the Alps with Únětice culture and the Nordic circuit.
