A new diagnosis of Vibronychiurus Pomorski, 1998 is given. V. archivari (Christiansen, 1956) comb. n. and V. hermonicus (Gruia, Poliakov & Broza, 2000) stat. & comb. n. are redescribed on the basis of the types and new specimens. Two new species are described: V. aestimabilis sp. n. from Khakasiya (Russia) and V. caucasicus sp. n. from Caucasus (Russia). A key to the species Vibronychiurus is provided.
In this paper six new species of the genus Brachystomella Ågren from the Neotropical region are described : B. desutterae sp. n. (Peru), B. mataraniensis sp. n. (Peru), B. pefauri sp. n. (Venezuela), B. purma sp. n. (Peru), B. saladaensis sp. n. (Argentina) and B. zerpa sp. n. (Venezuela). Brachystomella honda Christiansen & Bellinger, 1988 is synonymised with Brachystomella baconaoensis Gruia, 1983. Diagnoses and comments on the original descriptions as well as remarks on 22 species are included.
This paper deals with the taxonomy and distribution of Folsomia species from northern Russia with special reference to the Asian regions. Eight new species are described: F. amplissima sp. n., F. ancestor sp, n., F. atropolaris sp. n., F. borealis sp. n., F. brevisensilla sp. n., F. cryptophila sp. n., F. longidens sp. n., F. palaearctica sp. n. Five species, F. taimyrica, F. regularis, F. sp. aff. altamontana, F. alpha, and F. janstachi (nom. n. for Isotomina gracilis Stach, 1962 nec Folsomia gracilis Latzel, 1922), are redescribed. F. binoculata (Wahlgren) has been recovered and redescribed. The positions of F. macrochaetosa, F. magadani, and F. tesari have been defined more exactly on the basis of type material. An identification key of the northern Asiatic species of the genus is given.
On the ventral tube of males of Onychiuroides granulosus (Stach, 1934) there is a male ventral organ, which consists of two groups of four setae that are thickened, slightly flattened and bent. All setae of the male ventral organ are inserted in a richly sculptured cuticle. At the base of each seta there are a few large cells (basal cells) that have large irregular nuclei that contain a large amount of heterochromatin. In the cytoplasm of the basal cells there are numerous mitochondria, ribosomes and a rich system of endoplasmic reticulum. The plasma membrane of the basal cells forms richly folded, deep invaginations, filled with a dense material, which also occurs in particular setae and on their surface. The present study indicates that the male ventral organ is secretory and does not confirm its previously suggested sensory function., Bożena Simiczyjew, Dariusz Skarżyński, Adrian Smolis, Romuald J. Two new species belonging to the genus Willemia are described: W. bedosae sp. n. and W. christianseni sp. n. Redescriptions of Willemia dubia Christiansen & Bellinger, 1980 and W. similis Mills, 1934 are provided. Willemia vashtia Wray, 1950 is a new synonym of W. similis. These four species and four other of the genus constitute the Willemia anophthalma-group. This group is characterized by one feature not shared by the other species of the genus: the presence of setae a l on abdominal sternum IV. A comparative table and an identification key are given for these eight species, as well as some remarks on their habitats.
