The aim of this paper is to highlight some characteristic features in the use of poetical figures and puns in three corpora of Byzantine begging poems (Theodoros Prodromos, Manganeios Prodromos and Ptochoprodromos, mid-12th century) and to examine whether their analysis would shed light on the question of the authorship of these texts. At the beginning the two types of parallelism (antithesis) are presented - binary and triple -, characteristic not only for begging poetry but for the Byzantine "political verse", a fifteen-syllable accentual iambic verse in general. The paper continues with the analysis of the differences and similarities in the use of figures among the three collections. In Manganeios Prodromos the very frequent occurrences of paronomasia, figura etymologica and other (pseudo)etymological puns can be observed. Many similarities in the use of figures can be found between the poems of Ptochoprodromika and Manganeios Prodromos. On the other hand, Theodoros Prodromos' literary techniques are more varied and often without parallels in the other two collections. The paper also briefly discusses some hitherto unrecognized lexical and motific parallels between Manganeios Prodromos and the Ptochoprodromika collection.

The origin of the morpheme *-ai̭os occurring in some gentilicia of pre-Roman Italy attracted specific attention in the studies of personal names. It is a secondary suffix arising from merging of a thematic -a and the common *-i̭o- suffix. The remarkable frequency of *-ai̭os in a set of onomastic bases attested in a specific area of the Sabellian languages (particularly Sud-picene and Paelignian ones) since archaic time suggests that the onomastic bases at issue were responsible for the origin and diffusion of this morpheme. These onomastic bases are featured by the morpho-structural pattern aCCa- typical of 'baby talk', that in numberless world languages gave way to different kinship terms, especially basic terms such as 'father', 'mother', 'great mother', variously preserved in almost all languages of ancient Italy with both lexical and onomastic functions.

První část přináší pohled na dějiny klasických studií v Brně v širším kontextu historie fakulty a společenského dění vůbec, a to zejména prostřednictvím přímého svědectví archivních pramenů a vzpomínek pamětníků. Druhou část publikace tvoří reedice studie Františka Novotného, prvního ředitele semináře, Gymnasion aneb úvahy o řecké kultuře. Tato studie byla tiskem vydána naposledy v roce 1922. Odbornou i laickou veřejnost seznamuje s pojmy, na nichž, aniž si to uvědomujeme, stojí celá naše civilizace. ,This book is to be published on the occasion of 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno, of which the Seminary for Classical Studies has been an integral part from the very beginning. The first part of this book offers an overview of the history of the seminary in the wider historical context of whole the faculty and of Czechoslovak society, above all by means of the direct testimony of archive sources and the memories of witnesses. The second part of the book contains a re-edition of an important study by František Novotný, the first head of the seminary, entitled Gymnasion aneb úvahy o řecké kultuře (Gymnasium or Reflections on Greek Culture). This study, last published in 1922, acquaints scholars and laymen with ideas which, although we often do not realize it, form the basis of our civilisation.

It has been published since 2009 and is issued twice a year. Graeco-Latina Brunensia is continuation of the periodical Sborník prací filozofické fakulty brněnské univerzity (SPFFBU; Studia minora facultatis philosophicae universitatis Brunensis), Series classica (N), ISSN 1211-6335, which was published in 1996-2008 and Series archaeologica-classica (E), ISSN 0231-7915 (1956-1995).
