Museum libraries are devoted negligible attention now by both general and professional public. Therefore, it is necessary to draw attention to items and events in museum libraries, in particular those with smaller collections, and inform the public about them. This article has built on the Reports of the Museum of the Český Těšín District published until 1985 and materials acquired by the State District Archives of the towns of Karviná and Frýdek-
-Místek. The necessary facts on the development of the library and its activities after 1985 were obtained in an interview with former staff of the library ‘Silesia’. Other information was drawn from books, anthologies and articles dealing with events in the Český Těšín district or directly related to the Museum Library ‘Silesia’. Likewise the museum staff and records in the
Museum of the Český Těšín District itself were a valuable source of information. Although the Museum Library ‘Silesia’ is probably not one of the largest libraries of this type in the Czech Republic, it is clear that its content ranks it among important institutions proving the uniqueness of this region. It is a library whose collections contain documents important not only for the region but also for understanding the history of the whole nation.
