- Description:
- This article deals with empirical research on poverty in Czechoslovakia from the interwar period to the present in terms of three distinct phases. First, between 1918 and 1948, considerable attention was devoted to poverty, but research possibilities modest, so that a complex mapping of the problem was not feasible. Second, during the 1948 to 1989 period, the communist regime allowed "examinations" of poverty for the purpose of depicting pre-war capitalist Czechoslovakia as an impoverished, class-divided society. A similar approach was applied to studies of Western countries during the Cold War period. Research on poverty within the socialist regime was not allowed, even after the rehabilitation of sociology as a social science. Detailed analysis of household surveys was either forbidden or the results were embargoed; only simple cross-tabulations were ever published. Third, after 1989, the opportunities for undertaking research on poverty increased dramatically due to stimulus in both the national and international arenas. Important projects were fielded leading to many studies and published articles. Statistical surveys were used to map poverty primarily in terms of income; while sociological, ethnographic and anthropological approaches were used to examine key groups affected by poverty in Czech society. Within the literature there has been to date no synthesis of the study of the nature and origins of poverty in the Czech Republic., Jiří Večerník., and Obsahuje bibliografii a bibliografické odkazy

5. Proměny a problémy české sociální politiky
- Creator:
- Večerník, Jiří
- Format:
- Type:
- model:internalpart and TEXT
- Language:
- Czech
- Description:
- The article describes the development of Czech social policy and the issues that have surrounded it since 1989. The author begins by describing the character of the communist welfare state and outlining its theoretical alternatives. Despite the introduction of energetic changes during the early years of transition, since the mid-1990s the area of social policy has been dominated by stagnation, and instead of any real and specific efforts in this area there are only debates. Despite all the problems that plague the current social policy, at present the system performs satisfactorily, as is evident in the very low rate of poverty. However, in the long rim, concerns may arise over inadequate family situations, a frozen pension system, and poor work motivation. The 'reform' year of 2005 has seen the emergence of many different efforts relating to social policy, but it has not heralded any substantial changes aimed at a more efficient functioning of the system.

6. První syntéza sociálních dějin poválečného Československa

- Language:

- Description:
- Podle recenzenta je publikace významným a komplexně pojatým příspěvkem nejen k sociálním, ale i hospodářským, politickým a kulturním dějinám Československa v době jeho převrtaných poválečných změn. Její hlavní poselství spatřuje v poznání, že takzvané socialistické vymoženosti musely být na režimu vymáhány a nikdy nebyly vymoženy docela. and The reviewer calls this work an important, comprehensively conceived contribution not only to the social history of Czechoslovakia, but also to its economic, political, and cultural history in the period of revolutionary changes following the Second World War. The main achievement of the work, the reviewer says, is in revealing that the so-called “achievements of socialism” (socialistické vymoženosti) had to be demanded from the regime and were never completely achieved.

7. Work values and job attitudes in the Czech Republic between 1997 and 2005
- Creator:
- Večerník, Jiří
- Format:
- Type:
- model:internalpart and TEXT
- Subject:
- work values, job satisfaction, gender dimension, and Czech Republic
- Language:
- Czech
- Description:
- The article is conceived as a contribution to a critical reading of opinion data and the presentation of ISSP modules on Work Orientations from 1997 and 2005 in the Czech Republic. In the first part, some methodological problems regarding the inspection of work and job values are presented using examples drawn from previous research. In the second part, the framework of systemic transition is set up and hypotheses are presented regarding work values and attitudes from the perspective of gender and age, education and occupation. In the third part, a comparison is made of people's expectations regarding their work and jobs with their perceived fulfilment. In the fourth part, we consider the perceived location of workers between the distant worlds of family and firms and inspect factors of work and job satisfaction. In conclusion, we discuss the role of subjective perceptions in the economy and the question of a 'true' change in values during the transition.
