The present article deals with the Mesopotamian debate poems. It gives the general survey of the existing Sumerian and Akkadian representatives of the above mentioned literary genre. The special attention is paid to the relatively recently reconstructed text of the Akkadian debate poem known under the title “Tamarisk and the Date Palm”. The article presents its first Czech translation along with the commentary and exhaustive bibliographical notes.
The present article deals with two Sumerian narrative compositions named by modern editors as “Enmerkar and Ensuhgirrana” and “Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta” which are centred about the legendary figure of the king Enmerkar, purported ruler of the second postdiluvian dynasty, the so-called first dynasty of Uruk. It gives the analysis of their contents and offers the selected translations of some most interesting passages. Moreover, the Enmerkar’s tradition reflected in the Mesopotamian literary sources of the second and first millennia BC is traced.
