Mimořádně významné jsou nálezy mincí, skládacích vážek, kupeckých závaží a pozdně nomádských třmenů. and The article presents the results of the archaeological excavation of the Kostice – Zadní hrúd site, conducted in 2009–2011. The investigated site, 1.5 km from the heart of the nearby Great Moravian centre at Pohansko, lies at the edge of the Dyje (Thaya) River floodplain on a nondescript sand dune. A total of 160 sunken features and two graves from various periods were investigated over the excavated area of 2,405 m2. The majority of finds were from the Early Middle Ages, with the peak of settlement falling between the tenth and twelfth centuries. In the ninth century, the local settlement was part of the subsistence base for the vast Great Moravian agglomeration at Pohansko; following the demise of Pohansko, the Kostice – Zadní hrúd settlement was transformed into a craft-agrarian and trade centre of the second level. Finds of coins, balance scales, merchants’ weights and late nomadic stirrups are of extraordinary importance.
Velké Moravy – raně středověké „říše“, jež v době svého největšího rozkvětu politicky a kulturně ovládala nejen dnešní Moravu a Slovensko, ale významně ovlivňovala celou středovýchodní Evropu. The article presents a comprehensive archaeological-historical interpretation of the results of interdisciplinary research conducted in the lower Dyje (Thaya) River region in the Czech Republic in 2007–2012. In the ninth century this area belonged to the core of Great Moravia, an early medieval “empire” which at its peak not only enjoyed political and cultural control over today’s Moravia and Slovakia, but also significantly influenced the whole of central eastern Europe. Great Moravia collapsed suddenly at the beginning of the tenth century. The article attempts to clarify whether this collapse was as fatal as has been thought, how broad classes of the population reacted to this catastrophe, how development influenced the settlement structure and when the regeneration of society occurred.
Pět mincí z polohy Kostice – Zadní hrúd a blízkého okolí pochází z 2. pol. 10. století. Většinou se jedná o ražby datované před r. 976, doposud jediné z oblasti dolního Podyjí a Pomoraví, včetně přilehlé části rakouského Podunají. Od poloviny 11. stol. nastupují početné mince domácí provenience, ražné především olomouckými Přemyslovci. and The article evaluates medieval coins from the end of the tenth century to the beginning of the thirteenth century, found over the past decade in the lower Dyje (Thaya) River region (the southeast part of the Czech Republic) during both terrain excavations and surface surveys with the use of a metal detector. The assemblage of more than 170 coins is an important source for learning about monetary circulation in Moravia at the Early Middle Ages. Finds of individual coins were especially rare until recently. Five coins from the Kostice – Zadní hrúd site and the surrounding area date to the second half of the tenth century. These were mostly coins struck before 976, thus far the only ones from the lower Dyje River and Morava River regions, including adjacent Austrian parts of the Danubian Basin. Coin finds from the first half of the eleventh century indicate the prominent role of Hungarian coins in the structure of currency in Moravia. Numerous coins of domestic provenance, minted mostly by the Olomouc Přemyslids, start appearing in the middle of the 11th century.
Jeho vznik souvisí s tzv. cyklickým náčelnictvím. and This article considers the function of the Early Medieval centre at Pohansko near Břeclav. The source base and current state of knowledge regarding the site are briefly characterised. Discoveries made at Pohansko are presented in their broader context, and compared to similar sites elsewhere in Early Medieval Europe. The site is interpreted as a munitio, emporium and palatium of the Moravian Early Medieval rulers. It played an important role in the ‘mobilisation’ of wealth and in the control of territory. Its origin is related to a so-called cyclical chiefdom.
The study summarizes the latest results of the interdisciplinary research conducted by the Masaryk University at Pohansko near Břeclav, one of the most significant Early Medieval centres in the core area of the Great Moravian Empire (9th century AD). It brings data on the natural environment as collected within the 2005–2006 study of the local fortification. A special attention was given to Quaternary deposits of geological origin and buried soils. Within a palynological study, samples from 3 sections in a profile across the fortification and from 5 boreholes in its neighbourhood were analysed. Provenance of the building stone was studied using petrographic methods. The Pohansko Early Medieval centre is described as a complex cultural system significantly shaped by inputs from the ambient environment (such as variations in water regime in the flood plain). At the same time, this system acted in the other direction by its outputs (e.g., large-scale deforestation of landscape).
Článek seznamuje s vyhodnocením archeobotanických a archeozoologických vzorků z výzkumu v Kosticích – Zadním hrúdu (okr. V mladohradištním období (11. až 12. stol.), kdy zde vzniká centrální lokalita druhého řádu (trhová ves), produkuje sídliště poměrné široké spektrum plodin i kvalitní maso pro sebe, a možná i pro nedaleké správní centrum v přemyslovské Břeclavi. and The article presents the evaluation of archaeobotanical and archaeozoological samples from the excavation in Kostice – Zadní hrúd (Břeclav distr.) conducted in 2009–2011. The work helps answer questions connected with the subsistence strategies of society in the period between the 6th century and the beginning of the 13th century in the lower Dyje River region of the Czech Republic. The recorded trend supports the archaeological image of a settlement that was part of the subsistence hinterland of the nearby centre at Pohansko near Břeclav during the period of Great Moravia in the 9th century. The decline caused by the collapse of Great Moravian society in the 10th century was followed by a revitalisation and subsequent boom in the entire settlement complex. In the Late Hillfort period (10th to 12th century), which saw the creation of a secondary location (market village), the settlement produced a relatively wide spectrum of crops and quality meat for its own needs and possibly also for the nearby administrative centre in Přemyslid Břeclav.
Mimořádně významným výsledkem je objev centra druhého řádu na katastru obce Kostice s bohatými povrchovými nálezy keramiky, mincí, šperku, obchodních závaží a dalších artefaktů z neželezných kovů, které na konci 10. stol. nahradilo starší velkomoravskou aglomeraci na Pohansku u Břeclavi. and The article presents the results of systematic archaeological surveys in the lower Dyje (Thaya) River region in the southeast part of the Czech Republic. The area is described from the perspective of the natural environment and the history of archaeological research. The main attention is devoted to research from the years 2004–2012, including a description of the method combining analytical surface surveys, predictive modelling, aerial archaeology and metal detector surveys; project outcomes are also presented. The research project contributed to a deeper understanding of the history of the settlement structure in the lower Dyje River region between the sixth and thirteenth centuries. Of extraordinary importance was the discovery of a secondary centre within the cadastre of the village of Kostice, with rich surface finds of pottery, coins, jewellery, trading weights and other artefacts made of non-ferrous metals; this centre replaced an earlier Great Moravia agglomeration at Pohansko near Břeclav.
