- Description:
- Three new species of chigger mites, Eutrombicula costaricensis sp. n., Eutrombicula passerinorum sp. n., and Eutrombicula hectochaeta sp. n. are described from wild birds from Costa Rica. Two species, Eutrombicula pacae (Floch et Fauran, 1957) and Parasecia fundata (Brennan, 1969), are recorded for the first time in Costa Rica and on new host species. Data on the distribution of Blankaartia sinnamaryi (Floch et Fauran, 1956) in Costa Rica are also reported.

3. Comparison of virulence of Coxiella burnetii isolates from bovine milk and from ticks
- Creator:

- Subject:
- Coxiella burnetii, bovine milk, ticks, experimental animals, and virulence
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- Laboratory animals (mice and guinea pigs) were infected with the isolates of Coxiella burnetii (Derrick, 1939) obtained from bovine milk (M18 and M35) and the ticks Ixodes ricinus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Dermacentor marginatus (Sulzer, 1776) (Kl3 and Kl6, respectively), and with the reference strain Nine Mile. Neither mortality nor lethality occurred with the mice. Antibody response in mice infected with isolates from milk was lower (1 : 16-512) than that from ticks (1 : 32-4096). Onset of seropositivity also occurred later - on the 10th day post-infection (p.i.) for M18 and M35 in comparison with the 7th day for Kl3 and Kl6. In guinea pigs, infection manifested by fever. The fever was less evident in guinea pigs infected with isolates from milk (39.5-40.1°C) than in guinea pigs infected with isolates from ticks (39.5-40.6°C). Partially engorged females of Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabricius, 1794) were inoculated with isolates M18 and Kl3 . No differences in the multiplication of C. burnetii in haemocytes between these two isolates were ascertained.

4. First record of metacestodes of Mesocestoides sp. in the common starling (Sturnus vulgaris) in Europe, with an 18S rDNA characterisation of the isolate

- Subject:
- Mesocestoides, Sturnus vulgaris, metacestodes, tetrathyridia, Cestoda, and birds
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- Metacestodes of Mesocestoides sp. were recorded from Sturnus vulgaris (Passeriformes: Sturnidae) in the Czech Republic in April 2002. They were found in a cutaneous cyst and in the thoracic region of the body cavity of the bird. This is the first record of metacestodes of Mesocestoides sp. in this host species in Europe as well as the first finding of the formation of a cutaneous cyst provoked by this parasite. Additional specimens from Apodemus agrarius (Mammalia: Rodentia) from Bulgaria and Lacerta agilis (Reptilia: Squamata) from the Czech Republic were compared with that from S. vulgaris. Sequence data from the V4 variable region (18S rDNA) were used to compare genetic variability among these and previously characterized isolates of Mesocestoides spp. A number of distinct clades were recognized, with metacestodes from L. agilis showing the highest degree of relative divergence.

5. I ptáky trápí bradavice: papillomatóza u pěnkavy obecné

- Language:

- Description:
Ve všech těchto případech byly papillomy na nohách. and In the Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs), the Papillomavirus FPV (Fringilla coelebs papillomavirus) induces the development of aggregated, numerous wart-like (verruciform) lesions on feet, namely on toes and on tarsometatarsus (hock) and exceptionally also on bills. From the Czech Republic seven new cases of chaffinch papillomatosis have been reported since 2004. In Slovakia the first finding was made in 2007.

- Description:
- Roztoči z čeledi Harpirhynchidae žijí parazitickým způsobem na těle u řady druhů ptáků. Zástupci rodu Harpirhynchus tvoří makroskopicky zřetelné kožní cysty lokalizované pod křídly. H. nidulans tvoří cysty u dlasků tlustozobých a H. dusbabeki u sýkořic vousatých. Identifikováno bylo několik dalších druhů a rodů u různých skupin ptáků a protože jsou tito parazité hostitelsky specifičtí, lze očekávat nálezy dalších dosud neznámých druhů. and Mites from the family Harpirhynchidae are permanent highly specialized skin-dwelling bird parasites. The representatives of the genus Harpirhynchus create macroscopic voluminous cutaneous cysts located mainly at the base of the wings. In various bird species and genera, some new species from the family studied have been identified. Because these parasites are host-specific, more hitherto unknown species are expected to be found.

Příčiny tohoto vzplanutí zůstávají neznámé. and A total of 50 cases of skin avipoxvirus infection in the Great Tits (Parus major) have been described in central Europe since 2005.
