Obrana proti predátorům či býložravcům je důležitá pro nejrůznější skupiny organismů. Strategií chránících proti predaci najdeme celou řadu. Mnohé z nich organismus něco „stojí“ – vyžadují energii, která by mohla být investována do růstu anebo rozmnožování. Proto je poměrně časté, že se nejen takové chování, ale i obranné struktury nebo tvorba chemických látek projevují pouze při akutně hrozícím nebezpečí – jde o tzv. fenotypickou plasticitu antipredačních mechanismů. Autoři přibližují objev podobného obranného mechanismu – otrnění hlavy – u druhového komplexu perlooček Daphnia atkinsoni. Perloočky se tak brání proti listonohům rodu Triops. and Protection against predators is important for various groups of organisms.
