Net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), and leaf water potential (Ψl) of an annual pioneer C4 grass (Agriophyllum squarrosum) were compared under different simulated precipitation events in a field of Hunshandak Sandland, China. The increase of soil water content (SWC) had significant effect on these physiological traits (p<0.001). In the vegetative stage, the values of PN, E, and gs went up sharply when SWC increased at the beginning, while they went down with continuous increase of SWC. PN, E, and gs increased 1.4, 1.7, and 1.7 fold, respectively, with SWC range from 6.7 to 11.6 %. In the reproductive stage, similar trends were found, except for the climate with a higher SWC. This indicated that A. squarrosum was very sensitive to the small increment of SWC which might have a large photosynthetic potential. Ψl increased by about 8 % as the SWC changed from 6.7 to 8.8 %, and then maintained a steady level when the SWC was higher than 8.8 %, while the values of PN, E, and gs kept increasing even after this SWC. This might indicate that the adjustment of Ψl response to the changes of SWC lagged that of the photosynthetic parameters. and M. Z. Liu ... [et al.].
A sand-culture experiment was conducted in open-top chambers which were constructed in a greenhouse to investigate the responses of salt-stressed wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to O3. Plant seeding of JN17 (a popular winter wheat cultivar) was grown in saltless (-S) and saline (+S, 100 mM NaCl) conditions combined with charcoal-filtered air (CF, < 5 ppb O3) and elevated O3 (+O3,
80 ± 5 ppb, 8 h day-1) for 30 d. O3 significantly reduced net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance, chlorophyll contents and plant biomass in -S treatment, but no considerable differences were noted in those parameters between +O3+S and CF+S treatments. O3-induced loss in cellular membrane integrity was significant in -S plants, but not in +S plants evidenced by significant elevations being measured in electrolyte leakage (EL) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in -S plants, but not in +S plants. Both O3 and salinity increased proline content and stimulated antioxidant enzymes activities. Soluble protein increased by salinity but decreased by O3. Abscisic acid (ABA) was significantly elevated by O3 in -S plants but not in +S plants. The results of this study suggested that the specificity of different agricultural environments should be considered in order to develop reliable prediction models on O3 damage to wheat plants. and Y. Physiological responses of two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes (salt-tolerant DK961 and salt-sensitive JN17) to increased salt concentrations (50, 100, 150 mM NaCl: NaCl50, NaCl100, NaCl150) were studied. Photosynthetic capacity, irradiance response curves, contents of soluble sugars, proteins, and chlorophyll (Chl), K+/Na+ ratio, and activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase) in flag leaves were measured on 7 d after anthesis. In control (NaCl0) plants, non-significant (p>0.05) differences were found in gas exchange and saturation irradiance (SI) between salt-tolerant (ST) and salt-sensitive (SS) wheat genotypes. However, we found higher soluble sugar and protein contents, K+/Na+ ratio, and antioxidant enzyme activities, but lower Chl content and yield in ST wheat. Salinity stresses remarkably increased soluble sugar and protein contents and the antioxidant activities, but decreased K+/Na+ ratio, Chl contents, SI, photosynthetic capacities, and yield, the extent being considerably larger in JN17 than DK961. Although the soluble sugar and protein contents and the antioxidant activities of JN17 elevated more evidently under salt stresses, those variables never reached the high levels of DK961. The antioxidant enzyme activities of SS wheat increased in NaCl50 and NaCl100, but decreased rapidly when the NaCl concentration reached 150 mM. Thus the ST wheat could maintain higher grain yield than the SS one by remaining higher osmoregulation and antioxidative abilities, which led to higher photosynthetic capacity.
