The ultrastructure of cells of ground meristem in the peripheral zone of shoot apical meristem in Elodea canadensis Rich. was studied after treatment with cadmium in concentrations 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 g(Cd2+) m-3. After 5 d treatment, changes in the structural organisation of the plastid apparatus were found, namely in proplastid, amyloplast, and amoeboid stages of plastid development. and D. Stoyanova, E. Postlarvae of the cestode Hepatoxylon trichiuri (Holten, 1802) were found attached to the surface of viscera of Prionace glauca (Linnaeus, 1758) taken from Atlantic coastal waters off the south coast of Massachusetts, USA. Gross anatomy of the attachment site shows a quadripartite rim surrounding a deep pit with holes corresponding to the penetration site of each tentacle. Hyperplasia of the liver capsule into outgrowths at the attachment site conform to the attachment of the bothridia. The cu-boidal epithelium of the liver capsule became columnar forming papillary outgrowths, with a dense fibrotic reaction beneath the attachment site and infiltration by leukocytes and pigment containing granulocytic cells. Blood sinusoids beneath the attachment site are greatly enlarged. Postlarvae attached to the surface of the epigonal organs of three blue sharks were not accompanied by reactions. SEM examination of the scolex of H. trichiuri postlarvae revealed fused pairs of bothridia within infolded muscular lateral rims, porose tegument devoid of microtriches and a bilateral plane of symmetry in the tentacular armature.
Schistosoma monsoni (Puerto Rican strain) cercariae were exposed to 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 krad gamma radiation from “Co gamma source. From 10-100 krad irradiation no differences could be found in the behaviour of the cercariae when compared to the controls. From 200-500 krad there was an increase in mortality as well as in the number of cercariae that shed their tails. The Con A binding studies also performed on cercariae radiated with up to 100 krad indicate a direct relationship between the number of cercariae that bind Con A and radiation dose. All live cercarial heads collected after radiation also bound Con A. It thus seems possible that irradiation may act as a stimulus for cercariae to transform to schistosomulae.
A new species Wardium paucispinosum (Eucestoda: Hymenolepididae) parasite from the intestine of Larus maculipennis (Lichtenstein) from Mar del Plata, Argentina is described. The distinctive features of the new species are: strobilar length 52.8 mm; 10 aploparaksoid rostellar hooks, 14 (12-17) pm long; ratio between cirrus pouch length and mature proglottid width (CPL/MPW) 0.38 (0.27-0.50); regular cylindrical evaginated cirrus, 90 x 10 pm, with distal end without spines and proximal and medium thirds covered with spines 7 pm long; simple tubular membranous vagina, 110 x 10 pm, without sclcrotised portions and sphincters; eggs fusiform, 77 x 44 pm. Besides, llymenolepis semiductilis Szidat, 1964, from the intestine of Larus dominicanus and L. maculipennis from Santa Fé, Argentina is transferred to the genus Wardium Mayhew, 1925, based on the presence and shape of the rostellar hooks.
