John Mandeville and Odoric of Pordenone – what is the connection between these quite different authors of medieval authors of travelogues to East Asia? The first was a wise man of hidden identity who has described many countries from Middle East to China, utilizing many sources from large libraries in Europe, especially in England and north of France. The latter was a Franciscan missionary to China under Mongolian Yuan dynasty who has experienced his travel from Italy to China and backward. Odoric was one of main sources for Mandeville’s book in which some facts are corrupted owing to the lack of personal experience of the author. Nevertheless in some medieval manuscripts these two persons are mentioned as companions. This article brings some comparisons of the texts of the two authors.
