45. Sex skewed kleptoparasitic exploitation of common kestrel Falco tinnunculus
- Creator:
- Kitowski, Ignacy
- Type:
- article and TEXT
- Subject:
- sex skewed kleptoparasitism, common kestrel, Falco tinnunculus, Poland, and farmland
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- Sex skewed kleptoparasitic exploitation of kestrel Falco tinnunculus was studied on foraging areas in south-east Poland. All kestrel prey subject to kleptoparasitism attempts were small mammals caught by kestrels hunting by hovering.. Kleptoparasites attacked male kestrels more frequently than females. Males did not defend their prey as vigorously as females but males were more efficient at capturing further prey following loss of prey. Males also seemed to select habitats that facilitated more effective foraging which reduced costs of lost prey. Kleptoparasitism on kestrels was more successful by groups than by individual attackers.

- Subject:
- Maculinea alcon, host-ant specificity, Myrmica scabrinodis, Myrmica vandeli, Ichneumon, myrmecophily, endangered species, and Poland
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- Host-ant specificity of Maculinea alcon, an endangered obligatory myrmecophilous lycaenid butterfly, was studied at two sites in southern Poland (Świętokrzyskie Mts near Kielce). M. alcon larvae and pupae were found in nests of both Myrmica vandeli and M. scabrinodis, which is the typical host in Poland and Southern Europe. To our knowledge this is the first record of M. vandeli as a host of M. alcon. Our results show that M. scabrinodis and M. vandeli are about equally suitable as hosts. We hypothesize that both host ant species are closely related and have similar chemical profiles, and that the M. alcon "scabrinodis-vandeli" populations we studied belong to the M. alcon "scabrinodis" race. More than half of the M. alcon pupae, both from M. vandeli and M. scabrinodis nests, were parasitized by a single wasp species of the genus Ichneumon, which also suggests that the cuticular chemistry of the two ant species is similar.

47. Some remarks on the Stroke-Ornamented Ware culture in Poland

- Type:
- article and TEXT
- Subject:
- Neolithic, Stroke-Ornamented Ware culture, Poland, neolit, kultura s vypíchanou keramikou, and Polsko
- Language:
- Czech
- Description:
- The existence of the Stroke–Ornamented Ware culture north of the Sudetes and Carpathian Mts. has been a rather controversial problem. There appeared doubts as regards the accuracy of distinguishing this culture in certain regions; finally its presence in Poland was questionable. The former conception of its development – at least in South–Western Poland – has been now taken up again. The diversity of natural conditions in which its settlements were placed favoured regional differentiation. The people with stroked pottery spread from upper Oder to the Vistula basin. There were formed some specific peripheral culture groups. They had a nearly contact with the Lengyel and Polgar environments. At the present state of research it is possible to differentiate in Poland two basic development phases of the Stroke–Ornamented Ware culture. Finds from the later phase reveal in the Oder and Vistula basins evident features of the Lengyel–Polgar style. Radiocarbon dates of the sites with Stroke–Ornamented Ware obtained in Poland are within 4970–4670 B.C. and Existence kultury s vypíchanou keramikou severně od Sudetského masivu a Karpat byla dosud spíše kontroverzním problémem.

50. Species of vascular plants endemic to the Krkonoše Mts (Western Sudetes)
- Creator:
- Krahulec, František
- Type:
- article and TEXT
- Subject:
- apomicts, Czech Republic, endemics, Krkonoše, origin, Poland, and small population differentiation
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- This paper summarizes the present state of knowledge of the vascular plants endemic to the Krkonoše Mts. The species given in previous lists but excluded from the present one are also discussed together with the history of opinion of their status. Some endemics are of Holocene age, e.g. Sorbus sudetica is the result of a past hybridization while others originated from continuous differentiation of small populations over time. Some endemic species of other genera, for example, Hieracium, Taraxacum and Alchemilla appear to be older in origin, representing relict populations which occurred at low altitudes at least during the last glacial period. Their age is unknown, because it is unknown, when and how they evolved.
