Description
The segment from the 1928 weekly Deglův žurnál (Degl's Newsreel) Issue No. 9 features the construction of the Bakula Institute for Education through Life and Work (Bakulův ústav pro výchovu životem a prací) in Prague's Smíchov district. The Bakula Institute split off from the Jedlička Institute and its objective was to support the children in its care in gaining basic and financial independence. The children of the Bakula Institute earned money by performing concerts and selling handcrafted products. President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk also provided financial support to this institution, which was awarded "The Most Remarkable Educational Facility in Europe". Parents of the children and volunteers helped with the building's construction. The footage shows volunteers at work. The children's choir Bakula's singers sing to the workers during lunch break.
