Description
The segment from the 1939 Československý zvukový týdeník Aktualita (Czechoslovak Aktualita Sound Newsreel) Issue No. 2 features a speech by Prague Archbishop Karel Kašpar concerning the fundraising events Česká koleda (Czech Carol) and Národní pomoc (National Aid), which were organised by the České srdce (Czech Heart) initiative ahead of Christmas 1938 in response to the situation of refugees fleeing the German-occupied borders. People were temporarily housed in Sokol gyms, schools, factory warehouses, and even discarded railway carriages. The charity initiative České srdce provided them accommodation during Christmas, and the generously conceived collection from Národní pomoc aimed to not only address the situation of refugees but of all socially weak sections of the population.
