Description
The segment from the 1930 Československý filmový týdeník (Czechoslovak Newsreel) Issue No. 46 shows the grand opening of the Mánes Association of Fine Artists building on 31 October 1930. The functionalist complex connecting the Masaryk Embankment with the southern end of the Slavonic Island (Slovanský ostrov) was designed by architect Otakar Novotný and built in the years 1928-1930 on the original site of the old Šítkovský mill. The actual construction started on 10 July 1929. On 30 October 1930, the chairman of the construction committee, Josef Gočár, handed the building over to the SVU Mánes Association. Several people gave a speech at the opening ceremony, among them Otakar Novotný, the chairman of SVU Mánes, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edvard Beneš, the Minister of Education Ivan Dérer, and the Mayor of Prague Karel Baxa.
