Description
The segment from the 1932 Československý filmový týdeník (Czechoslovak Newsreel) Issue No. 20 features the solemn consecration of the new Roman Catholic Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord (kostel Nejsvětějšího srdce Páně) on Jiřího z Poděbrad Square (Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad) in Vinohrady on May 8, 1932. The monumental modernist building, made of coarse bricks supported by a reinforced concrete frame, was realized in the years 1928-1932 and designed by architect Jože Plečnik, who found inspiration in the shape of Noah's Ark. The church was consecrated by Prague Archbishop Karel Kašpar. A procession advanced from Laubova Street to the church's entrance. Shots of the area around the square, the corner of Nitranská and Vinohradská Street, and the Svatopluk Čech orchards (Sady Svatopluka Čecha) and Milešovská Street.
