Description
The segment shows the Odborný léčebný ústav tuberkulózy a respiračních nemocí (Specialised Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Treatment Institute) in Nová Ves pod Pleší which was designed by architect Rudolf Kříženecký and built in 1912-1916 as the first inpatient sanatorium for the treatment of tuberculosis and lung diseases in Bohemia. The complex, financed by a national collection, was opened on 2 February 1918. Shots of the going-ons in the sanatorium. Guests arrive in a horse-drawn carriage, patients are resting by the water, some are bathing, and others are sunbathing on the veranda of the sanatorium. Footage of the patients having lunch in the dining room. The doctor and nurses visit the patients on the veranda loungers on a ward round. Animated sequences of human lungs affected by pneumothorax. Also included in the segment are archival images from President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk's visit to the sanatorium in 1922. Footage of children being treated with a sunlamp.
